Understanding What Services Warehouse’s Offer in the Midwest

by
Gerald Busse

Warehouses in the Midwest offer a wide variety of services. They serve a vast network of companies in Illinois (Chicago), Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Understanding what services public warehouses have to offer can help make the right decision on which warehousing company is right for your company.

Public Warehousing- This is where a business provides short or long-term storage to a variety of other businesses, usually on a month-to-month basis. A public warehouse will generally use their own equipment and staff, however, agreements may be made where the client either buys or subsidizes equipment. Public warehouse fees are usually a combination of storage fees (per pallet or actual sq. footage) and transaction fees (inbound and outbound). Public warehouses are most often used to supplement space requirements of a private warehouse.

Contract Warehousing- A contract warehouse is a business that handles shipping, receiving, and storage of products on a contract basis. Contract warehouses will generally require clients to commit to a specific period of time (generally in years) for the services. Contracts may or may not require clients to purchase or subsidize storage and material-handling equipment. Fees for contract warehouses may be transaction and storage based, fixed, cost plus, or any combination.

Pick N Pack- Processing small to large quantities of product, often truck or train loads and disassembling them, picking the relevant product for each destination and re-packaging with shipping label affixed and invoice included. Usual service includes obtaining a fair rate of shipping from common as well as expediting truck carriers.

Distribution- The process of storing, shipping, and transporting goods.

Consolidation- Reducing costs and shortening the supply chain by manufacturers moving away from using multiple warehouses as storage facilities and combining their inventories with other producers in huge warehouses that take the place of internal distribution centers or third party logistics providers.

Order Fulfillment- The activity of processing customer shipments. Though most manufacturing and warehouse operations will process customer shipments, this term usually refers to operations that ship many small orders (usually parcels) to end users as opposed to operations that process larger shipments to other manufacturers, wholesalers, or resellers. Examples of fulfillment operations would include operations that process shipments for mail-order catalogs, internet stores, or repair parts.

Parcel Distribution- The process of handling and delivering small packages.

There are many warehousing companies in the Midwest serving major metro hubs such as Chicago, Illinois. While warehousing companies in the Midwest are not limited to these services, knowing a company offers them shows that you can trust in them to do business with.
